Boris Johnson has promised to issue one-off payments of £1,000 to ‘wet pubs’ in December. ‘Wet pubs’ are pubs that only sell drinks/do not sell food, meaning they will be unable to open in Tier 2 and Tier 3 areas due to new restrictions.
On Tuesday (1 December), Johnson addressed MPs saying: “We’ve already extended the furlough scheme for all businesses until the end of March… we’ve allocated £1.1bn for local authorities to support businesses at particular risk, and today we’re going further with a one-off payment of £1,000, in December, to wet pubs – that’s pubs that do not serve food.”
Mike Cherry, national chair of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), has said the payment “simply does not go far enough” and said £1,000 will only cover the cost of a single keg of beer.
