Worcestershire family up for business award

A Worcestershire gritting and snow clearance company has been shortlisted for a prestigious county business award.

Himbleton-based AA Salt, which helps hundreds of local businesses keep their premises safe by gritting and snow ploughing their car parks, has been shortlisted in the Family Business of the Year category at the 2019 Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber Business Awards.

Formed in 2002, the family firm is run by businesswoman Nikki Rogers, husband Mark, and son Ben Tanner. It has gone on to employ 27 full and part-time workers and has grown with over 400 customers from both the public and private sector.

Mrs Rogers, the company’s managing director, said the firm’s success is down to building a dedicated team of employees which has given the business more of a ‘family feel’.

She said: “We are so delighted to be shortlisted for this year’s family business award and it’s the icing on the cake after a busy but successful 12 months.

“I can’t pinpoint just one reason for our success in the past year but a big milestone was Ben joining – bringing new energy and innovative ideas. This has allowed us not only to maintain the all-important family feel in the business, but also to keep delivering the service our customers expect, even if it has meant working 24 hours a day during busy periods.

“We are also continuing to invest in training and development for our team and over the past 17 years have tried to offer full-time or seasonal employment opportunities to people from the rural sector in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

“Overall, to provide a place where people love to come to work is so important to us and just to be shortlisted for this award highlights how far we have come.”

AA Salt was widely praised in 2018 for how it kept businesses running after heavy snow hit Worcestershire – disrupting the county for almost a month. Working 24 hours every day, the team spread nearly 1,000 tonnes of salt onto car parks and roads to help keep the county moving. This included for doctors surgeries, schools and retail parks.

The winners in each of the 14 categories will be announced at an awards ceremony hosted by the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday 4 July at the Worcester Arena.
