Worcester record-breaking weightlifter to represent GB in December

Record breaking weightlifter, Myren Madden, is set to represent GB for the second time in December at the EWF European Youth Championships held in Israel, after another outstanding performance at the British Midland Championships.

Myren Madden, the 17 year old RGS school boy from Grafton Flyford in Worcestershire, continues to take the weightlifting scene by storm, extending his own British records at the British Midland Championships. After exceeding personal bests by lifting 117kg in ‘snatch’ and 142kg in ‘clean and jerk’, Myren was selected to compete at the EWF European Youth Championships, which take place next month in Israel.

Myren who is thrilled to be representing his country again explains: “The British Midland Championships was one of my toughest competitions to date. Not only was there some stiff competition but the timing and waits between lifts meant exceeding my personal bests was a big challenge.” He adds “I am overwhelmed to be representing my country again next month. I’m giving 110% to my training so I’m aiming for a great result in Israel too”.

In his first international competition, representing GB at the World Championships in the USA in March, Myren achieved 9th place in the World. Looking to improve on his weightlifting further, Myren’s dedicated team of coaches have an intensive training programme in place, in the run up to the European Youth Championships.

Myren’s long list of achievements also includes being awarded a place on “The Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme” (TASS). Funded by Sport England it is a partnership between talented athletes, education institutions and the Sport England Talent Programme. The scheme allows athletes in education to get the very best from their sporting and academic careers without having to choose between the two, providing vital support services. It is a fantastic opportunity to receive support and additional help at this vital athletic development point.

Currently also part of the RGS Rugby Team first X1 whilst studying at RGS Worcester and a talented Academy level rugby player, Myren is an ambitious sportsman with the world at his feet.
