The official presentation of the physical purple flag to Worcester was made last month in Ireland, following the city’s award of the prestigious Purple Flag status in August this year.
Collecting the purple flag on behalf of Worcester at a glittering ceremony were Gloria Hawthorn and Crystal Thompson from Worcester Business Improvement District (BID).
The Purple Flag accreditation which recognises safety in the evening and night time economy was awarded to Worcester after months of preparation and work led by Worcester BID together with Worcester City Council and West Mercia Police.
Laura Blake, Purple Flag Accreditation Assistant at the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM, which runs the Purple Flag scheme) said: “Worcester has shown that during a difficult time for the evening economy, they have used the Purple Flag process as a tool to support businesses and act as a driver for improvement. The numerous exciting and engaging projects in progress, and the focus on recovery and bolstering the unique draw of history and culture illustrates their success in being awarded their Purple Flag.”
Glo Hawthorn, Senior Business Engagement Executive Worcester BID said: “Going to collect the actual purple flag was such a proud moment for our team. It was also good to meet other cities who have gone through the Purple Flag process, and to compare stories. St Helens, Wigan, Cork and Leicester Square in London were also amongst other there with us collecting their flag.”
Karen Shields, Membership & Purple Flag Engagement Manager at the ATCM added: “Achieving Purple Flag status and maintaining the standard is a fantastic achievement especially following such a difficult year for many towns and cities. The accreditation now covers more than 70 locations across the UK and looks at the vibrancy and diversity of the evening and night time offer as well as safety and good solid partnership working. Partners need to prove continuing commitment and dedication to maintain Purple Flag status.”
