Princess Royal visit marks long-standing association for award-winning Worcester-based GL

Power of another sort took over Worcester-based manufacturer GL yesterday (Monday) as the team received a visit from HRH The Princess Royal.

GL, which is based in Great Western Business Park, McKenzie Way, has a long association with The Princess Royal, having previously been awarded the Princess Royal Training Award in 2016, but this marks the first time the royal has visited its headquarters.

During the afternoon, The Princess Royal toured the company’s recently launched E-home and spoke to staff about the all-electric solutions on offer to help house builders achieve carbon neutral homes. They also spoke about their experiences working for the company, from successful apprentices who started their careers with GL to working mothers benefiting from its flexible working policy.

E-home showcases a range of products to help housebuilders (and homeowners) achieve carbon neutral targets, including electric vehicle (EV) chargers, infrared heating technology and energy storage systems.

Anthony Ottway, MD of GL, said: “It was an absolute honour and privilege to welcome The Princess Royal to GL. Everyone was thrilled to be part of her visit. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet The Princess Royal on several occasions and just as I remembered she was very charming and interested in what we do.

“Having been awarded The Princess Royal Training Award several years ago, it was lovely to hear that she remembered us and was keen to learn more about how the company has developed since then.

“She stayed with us for nearly an hour and spoke to every member of staff. She was especially fascinated in our technology and approach to helping the developer. She really seemed to understand the whole premise of E-home and how the products linked together to provide benefits for both the house builder and homeowner.”

The visit also provided an opportunity for GL to highlight its flexible working policy, which encourages staff with other responsibilities, such as working mothers  to progress in their careers.

GL design and manufacture products to comply with relevant building regulations, from energy efficiency to fire and acoustics. It has been successfully supplying lighting, safety alarms and electrical accessories to new house builders for over 20 years. With the cost-of-living on the rise and building regulations changing to reflect growing energy needs, E-home offers solutions to meet Part L, SAP and EPC targets and the Future Homes Standard.
