Pay-as-you-go model removes barriers to entry for PR firm

You Do Better PR are breaking down the barriers to Public Relations with their pay-as-you-go business model.

More often than not, Public Relations Agencies work on a retained basis, but You Do Better break through that barrier to entry by charging an affordable hourly rate.

Making PR accessible to every business throughout Herefordshire and Worcestershire, the local PR Agency charge £45 per hour, ensuring that money doesn’t impede access to the power of Public Relations.

What are Barriers to Entry?

Barriers to entry are factors that put obstacles in the way of you and a sale: something that impedes new clients from buying your product or service.

It’s an economic and business term used to describe factors that can prevent or make it difficult for newcomers to a market or industry sector. In turn, this can limit you as a competitor. Barriers like this include high start-up costs, regulatory hurdles or other obstacles that prevent new competitors from easily entering a business sector.

Shopify advise: “The greater the barriers to entry which exist, the less competitive the market will be. Barriers to entry are an essential aspect of monopoly markets.”

Barriers to entry – factors which make it difficult to enter the market – include:

  • Economies of Scale – an existing firm already enjoys lower costs per product/service which is too/difficult to compete with.
  • Natural / Geographical Barriers – no access to a suitable location.
  • Brand loyalty – customers’ attachment to the current products or services they buy (and as seen in ads etc).
  • Limited and Predatory Pricing – current brands have very low costs to deter competition, or a new business starts a price war.
  • Vertical Integration – you have no access to suppliers so here’s no marketplace available.
  • Legal Patents – the legal barrier to copying other organisations’ products.
  • Knowledge and expertise gained from experience – many years of operating in the markets will give current suppliers superior knowledge and expertise.
  • Being the first mover in the industry – the big brands have already dominated the market and no amount of advertising will compete with them.
  • Network effects – the success of the business requires a firm to have a critical mass of users and no competitor will rival them because others are using their space.
