Local firms gather to discuss how the skills shortage is impacting their business and sector with local MP Nigel Huddleston.

10 CEO’s from Worcestershire firms gathered at the start of September at Listers JLR Droitwich for a roundtable lunch with Nigel Huddleston, the local MP for Mid-Worcestershire.
Chamber Members of different sectors and sizes attended the intimate roundtable discussion to discuss the skills shortage, how it impacts their business or sector and what the solutions might be.
During the lively discussion, firms highlighted concerns that teachers have little business experience outside the class room, the pressure on students to take an academic route and the stigma around technical education, and lastly, the labour market shortage experienced locally due to our very low unemployment levels.
Nigel Huddleston MP left the insightful lunch with two urges from the local firms, firstly, to make work experience mandatory in the curriculum and secondly, to ensure that trainee teachers have their own work experience outside of education.
If you would be interested in attending a future MP roundtable, please contact Policy Manager, Sophia Haywood on to register your interest.
