Manufacturing leaders call for extension of furlough scheme

Make UK, the UK’s largest supporting group to the manufacturing industry, representing 20,000 companies has called for the government’s furlough scheme to be extended for critical sectors of the British industry or the country risks losing key skills in the recovery efforts and could face a fresh wave of redundancies after October.

Almost two thirds of Make UK members agreed with the proposal that the scheme should be extended.

This coming after the head of the CBI, Carolyn Fairbairn, urged the government to implement a successor to the scheme to help protect jobs.

The scheme has paid 80% of wages to over 9 million furloughed employees since its launch in March, with the scheme closing at the end of October. The government will be paying companies who bring their furloughed employees back a job retention bonus of £1,000 for each employee through until January.
