KEMP Hospice challenges common myths during April Awareness Month

This April, KEMP Hospice is raising awareness to challenge widespread misconceptions about its hospice care and encourage more people to access the support available.

Despite the essential role hospices play in supporting people with life-limiting illnesses, many members of the public still misunderstand what hospice care involves. KEMP Hospice is tackling these myths head-on through its “Myths vs Facts” campaign, highlighting the reality of KEMP Hospice care, and the difference it makes to patients and families across the community.

“We understand that if you’ve never needed the help of hospice care or bereavement support, you might not understand who KEMP Hospice is or what we do.” said Ian Carr, Head of Fundraising & Communications at KEMP Hospice. “But it’s important that the Wyre Forest community knows we provide free of charge care and support for those affected by a life-limiting illness or bereavement.”

There are common misconceptions about hospice care so KEMP have been busting myths trying to help people understand their services, and how people can find support. Ian continued, “A common misunderstanding is many people think our bereavement support, including counselling and emotional support for adults, children and young people, is only available for those who knew someone cared for by KEMP Hospice. But this isn’t true. It’s free of charge and available to anyone in Wyre Forest who has experienced a bereavement in the last 3 years. We also hear people who think that as a hospice, we’re funded by the NHS. Each year we must raise around 80% of the funds needed to provide our services. That’s around £1.9 million. The remaining 20% is from government funding which we apply for each year and is never guaranteed.”

KEMP Hospice hopes that by addressing these myths, more people will feel confident accessing its support. “There can be many reasons why people may need to connect with KEMP Hospice. A diagnosis of a life-limiting condition, a bereavement or a change in their circumstances, can all lead to confusion and uncertainty. We want our community to understand that when life changes, we are here.”

Following the April awareness month, KEMP Hospice will be opening its doors to welcome people on Thursday 21st May 2026 from 10am to 3pm. The KEMP Hospice Open Day will allow visitors to learn more about what services are available, meet the team, and to learn more about your local Hospice.
