Hard Work – But Glorious: Stories from the Herefordshire Suffrage Campaign

When The Courtyard in Hereford closed its doors in March 2020 due to the pandemic, Fundraising Manager Clare Wichbold found herself at home on furlough. She took the opportunity to bring together her research on the suffrage campaign in Herefordshire to write a book. It’s a factual account of what happened in the county during the struggle for women to get the vote.

Clare said: “I made a point of writing something every morning towards my book and produced a draft text by the end of October 2020. I struggled to find a publisher, but Orphans Studio in Leominster came to the rescue. They did a fantastic job supporting me to self-publish, advising throughout the design and print process”.

Hard Work – But Glorious has subsequently received recognition in a national award scheme for local history publications and is on sale, price £15, from a number of independent local outlets across Herefordshire.
