Garland Surgical Ltd was founded in early 2022, a collaboration between British-Maltese Entrepreneur Simon Mifsud, Netherlands based Health-Tech Venture Builder NLC and the inventing team from the University of Malta. Garland is dedicated to pioneering innovation in joint replacement, commencing with the development of the proprietary MaltaHip. With a world-class group of individuals from clinical, engineering, design and commercial backgrounds, the team is in the best position possible to develop and commercialise the MaltaHip by 2027.
In 2015, a team at the University of Malta set out to answer the question: why is it that humans suffer from hip and knee arthritis but do not suffer as much ankle arthritis, despite the fact that the ankle joint is carrying substantially more weight than either of the other joints? Answering this question led to the development of the award-winning MaltaHip, a tri-mobility hip made of 3 separate rotating cylinders allowing movement on a single plane each, mimicking the ankle. Tested in a recognised facility, this hip showed drastically less wear, indicating the possibility of a prosthesis with a greatly increased lifespan of possibly over 50 years. For the first time there is the possibility of patients having a hip for life without the need for revision surgery.
