Department for Transport relax rules on drivers hours

The Department for Transport has introduced a temporary and limited relaxation of the enforcement of EU & GB drivers hours rules in England, Scotland and Wales. This relaxation was due to end on 21 April 2020 and will now run until 31 May 2020.

Anyone driving under EU drivers hours rules or the GB rules and undertaking a carriage of goods by road can use the relevant relaxations where necessary. The government believes that the relaxations should be used by drivers involved with the transportation of essential goods by road such as; medical equipment and the delivery of food and hygiene items.

The Department of Transport has stressed whilst the relaxations are in place, driver safety must not be compromised and drivers shouldn’t be expected to drive whilst tired and that employers remain responsible for the health and safety of their employees and other road users.
