Christmas ‘bubble’ restrictions

Addressing the Commons on Wednesday 16 December, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the rules allowing three households to mix over the Christmas period were “maximums, not targets to aim for”, adding: “a smaller Christmas is going to be a safer Christmas and a shorter Christmas is a safer Christmas.”

Restrictions will still be relaxed between 23 and 27 December – where three different households will be allowed to meet and mix in homes, places of worship or public outdoor spaces (not pubs or restaurants) to form a ‘Christmas bubble’ – but the PM said people should “think hard” before meeting friends and family. The rules also allow you to travel between tiers and between UK nations to meet your bubble.

Mr Johnson also urged caution over seeing elderly or vulnerable relatives, saying that since the vaccine was being rolled out to these groups “by the early months of the new year”, they would be able to meet people more safely soon.
