Businesses relieved as customers finally welcomed back indoors

In one of the biggest steps forward in the past 14 months, Monday saw the most significant ease in coronavirus restrictions to date as hospitality businesses were allowed to serve customers indoors as well as hotels welcoming guests for overnight stays and many leisure businesses reopening as well.

Up until this point, restaurants and pubs have only been allowed to open to serve customers outdoors. However, with an estimated 60% of hospitality venues having no outdoor space, Monday’s ease in restrictions represented an important step in the road to economic recovery allowing businesses to regain profits lost during the months spent in lockdown.

The government’s long-term strategy to support businesses helped to ease the pressure on many organisations and saw them through the latest national lockdown. However, there is concern from many businesses that this support will only serve as a stop gap. It is the hope that by the summer period we will have continued on the roadmap to lifting restrictions completely and businesses witness a boost in trade to help them through the Autumn months when deferred rent payments are due and the repayment of covid loans begin.

Government should keep a close eye on the progress of companies as it may be the case that they need a cash boost due to a lack of reserves or could face closure. Business rates reductions, VAT rates and support with debts due to landlords may be some of the key areas to consider further support.

It is now more important than ever to ensure your key business concerns are heard. The Chambers’ Quarterly Economic Survey for quarter 2 is now open and we are looking to hear from all businesses on how the last 3 months has been for you. This data will then be presented to key decision makers locally and nationally and will shape further business support as we see restrictions easing.
