Herefordshire Council making ‘strong progress’ on multi-million-pound programme to bolster transport links, active travel and safer routes for schools

  • Council confirms continuing progress across 10 schemes, with majority completing within 18 months
  • Comes as Council invests £37 million in roads and highways improvements
  • Renewed commitment to improving travel choices for residents, businesses and visitors

Herefordshire Council is due to complete nine key transport projects within the next 18 months to help improve connectivity, safety and accessibility for tens of thousands of residents, commuters, workers and visitors.

The latest assessment of transport projects shows positive progress across a programme worth more than £27 million, which includes £19.9m of Levelling Up funding from central government.

The update provides a clear overview of delivery milestones across projects designed to improve connectivity, support active travel and strengthen local infrastructure.

The Council recently revealed that more than 140 roads across Herefordshire will benefit from resurfacing and maintenance work as part of the wider £37 million investment in roads, footpaths and public spaces in 2026/27.

The programme includes improvements to key routes and local roads connecting communities across the county, including schemes on the A44 in Leominster, the A438 Ledbury Road in Hereford and the A465 Belmont Road.

In total, around 20 miles of road will be resurfaced, with a further 64 miles receiving preventative treatments such as surface dressing and targeted repairs to extend the life of the network and help prevent potholes forming.

The update on major projects comes shortly after Cabinet approved Herefordshire’s Delivery Plan for 2026/27, which sets out an ambitious programme of investment and delivery across transport, housing, education, economic growth and community services.

The Delivery Plan confirmed the Council’s commitment to progressing major infrastructure improvements including the Hereford Transport Hub, the Holme Lacy Road corridor and improvements along Aylestone Hill, alongside wider investment in safer routes to school, walking and cycling connections and local bus services.

Several of these projects are now already underway, with construction progressing on key schemes and others moving through detailed design stages ahead of delivery.

The Hereford Transport Hub, which will deliver improved connectivity between bus and rail and an attractive welcoming public realm space at the front of Hereford’s grade II listed station, is now around 65 per cent complete and expected to open in October 2026.

Construction is also progressing on the Holme Lacy Road active travel improvements, currently around 30 per cent complete, while a number of smaller schemes designed to improve safety and access across neighbourhoods are nearing completion.

The Council says the programme reflects its long-term commitment to improving travel options, supporting sustainable transport and creating safer streets for residents.

Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure, Cllr Philip Price, said: “We are delivering one of the most significant programmes of transport and infrastructure investment the county has seen in many years.

“This strong progress provides a clear picture of where each project sits and when people can expect to see improvements delivered.

“Many schemes are already complete or nearing completion, while others are progressing through design so construction can begin as soon as possible.

“These investments will help improve connectivity, support economic growth and create safer, healthier ways for people to travel across Herefordshire.”
