Winter Diesel Day at the Severn Valley Railway

The Severn Valley Railway (SVR) is set to round off 2025 in style with the return of its popular Winter Diesel Day on Monday 29 December, offering a full day of powerful diesel action set against the scenic backdrop of the Severn Valley on a crisp winter’s day.

Designed to appeal to committed railway enthusiasts and families alike, the Winter Diesel Day will see an intensive timetable in operation between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, showcasing the SVR’s impressive home diesel fleet alongside a pair of special visiting locomotives. It’s a chance to experience the line at its loudest, with engines working hard through the winter landscape.
Passengers can relax in the comfort of the SVR’s heritage carriages, all kept warm throughout the day. Where diesel locomotives are unable to provide carriage heating themselves, the railway will be utilising two of its smaller steam locomotives within the train consist to supply traditional steam heat, ensuring everyone stays cosy on board while enjoying the sights, sounds and atmosphere of winter rail travel.

Away from the trains, there is plenty to enjoy along the line. Visitors can break their journey at The Engine House at Highley, browse station gift shops, and enjoy hot food and drinks from cafes and kiosks across the railway. SVR pubs will also be open, serving a range of well-kept real ales, making the event a great day out for all ages.
SVR managing director Gus Dunster said:

“Our Winter Diesel Day is a fantastic way to end the year. It combines big diesel power, visiting favourites and a busy timetable with the unique charm of travelling through the Severn Valley in winter. By using steam heating within the train, we can offer all the atmosphere and warmth of our heritage carriages, whatever the weather, and create a memorable day out for enthusiasts, families and first-time visitors alike.”

Stars of the show on the day are set to include:
• Class 37s 37418 and 37508, with thanks to LORAM and Steve Beniston
• Class 17 ‘Clayton’ D8568, making its first runs of the year
• Class 20 20048
