Unison Union Badges

In 1993 a new trade union was created known as “Unison”, it was the amalgamation of three public sector trade unions; The National Union of Public Employees (NUPE),The Confederation of Health Service Employees (COHSE) and The National and Local Government Officers Association (NALGO). Today, Unison is the largest of all UK unions with a membership exceeding 1.25 million and has been widely and further known due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Selcraft were part of a consortium of companies chosen to replicate their new logo into an attractive metal enamel badge. The interpretation of the logo was agreed by Unison and the consortium of producers for consistency and demand for the badge was exceptional: it ran into 10’s of thousands for many months to satisfy demand. The photo shows the Unison badge that Selcraft UK produced. It is a faithful interpretation of their logo with both opaque (purple) and transparent (green) enamel with raised metal text and containing borders in electroplated gold. In particular, the badges illustrate how integrating a transparent enamel colour into the design can be used for a positive and creative effect.

The Unison design has certainly stood the test of time and, as with all well-known and famous organisations, both here in the UK and worldwide, the best logos and brands can last forever. Selcraft have been involved, both in the past and at present, with many unions, designing and producing members’ badges along with a wide range of identity products featuring that Union’s logo.
