IOSH Training
IOSH qualifications help people, across all sectors, to create a healthy and safe work environment. Those with an IOSH qualification will be able to ensure that their organisations health and safety practices are current, effective, well managed and meet legal requirments.
What is IOSH?
The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is the world’s largest health and safety membership body, with over 46,000 members across 130 countries. As a UK-based organisation, IOSH offers professional awards to raise workplace health and safety standards. Their training courses, such as Working Safely® and Managing Safely®, equip individuals at all levels with essential health and safety knowledge.
Here at the Chamber, we run frequent IOSH Training courses and offer bespoke days or weeks, depending on the qualification.
Course overview
Health & Safety training combining theory and practical learning.
The Importance of IOSH Training
IOSH training is crucial for businesses to ensure legal compliance, reduce workplace accidents, enhance employee confidence, and promote a safety-first culture. It boosts productivity, improves morale, and strengthens organisational reputation through effective health and safety management practices.
IOSH Training Courses
IOSH training courses are interactive, combining presentations, case studies, group discussions, and practical exercises. Delivered In person, they focus on real-world scenarios, ensuring participants gain practical knowledge and skills to manage workplace health, safety, and environmental challenges effectively.
IOSH Qualifications
The training courses will be followed by an assessment. Upon completion and passing of the assessments, you will be rewarded with an IOSH Certificate in your chosen course.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the certificate valid for?
There is no expiry date on IOSH Managing Safely® and IOSH Working Safely® certificates. As they are awareness-level courses, they do not ‘expire’; however, we do recommend as best practice that delegates update around the 3-5 year mark, and there is a one-day refresher course available for this.
Are there any assessments?
Yes, for both Managing Safely® and Working Safety®—to be completed on the last day of the course.
For Managing Safety®, you will also be required to complete a workplace risk assessment project within 2 weeks of the date of the last day of the course.
The majority of the questions are multiple-choice with a small number of free format questions.
The Working Safely® Assessment consists of 2 parts: Part A is multiple choice, and Part B covers identifying hazards and controls.
Both Managing Safely® and Working Safely® are closed-book assessments, but there is no time limit—delegates can take the time they need to complete it on the day.
If I fail, can I retake and is there any cost associated with this?
You are allowed 1 resit if you fail to achieve the required pass mark. This will be discussed with you at the time, and mutually acceptable arrangements will be made for the resit. There will be no additional charge for this.
What qualifications do the trainers need to be able to deliver Working and Managing Safely?
To deliver IOSH courses, the trainer must:
- Be a Technical Member of IOSH.
- Be up to date with their continuing professional development (CPD).
- Have a level 3 adult training qualification on a regulated framework or have completed the IOSH Train the Trainer course.
- Have two years of substantial face-to-face training experience.
What happens to my assessment papers following the course
These are held and kept secure by the organisation’s training department for a period of 6 weeks following the issue of certificates, after which time they are destroyed.
When will I get my certificate?
Certificates are usually received approximately 6 weeks from the end of the course.
Do you need to become a member of IOSH to attend the training?
No
What checks are in place to ensure assessment papers (and project for the Managing Safely course) are marked accurately and fairly?
Your trainer will carry out the first marking of the assessment paper and project. This will be followed by a second marker to confirm accuracy and verify the final mark.
IOSH may, from time to time, ask to moderate some of the papers.
Should you be unhappy with the mark you have been awarded, you will have recourse to an appeals procedure. If you wish to appeal, please visit https://iosh.com/about/legal/policies/ao-policies.
How long will it take for the certificates to arrive once ordered?
This can depend on a number of factors, such as if moderation of papers is required, when payment is received, if you have a credit account with available funds, and when the certificates are requested. However, generally, if there is no moderation required and you have a credit account in place as you do, the certificates should be with you within 2-3 weeks of ordering them (the print run goes over to our printing house each Friday morning and includes all certificates requested from within the previous week; these are then printed and dispatched by the end of the following week). Please note if you order certificates on a Friday, these won’t be included in that day’s print run; they will be on the following Fridays.
Is there a charge for lost certificates?
Should you require a replacement certificate, then this will be charged at the current rate charged by IOSH.
What is the pass mark?
Managing Safely:
The pass mark for the assessment is 36 out of 60.
The pass mark for the project is 23 out of 38.
Delegates must achieve a minimum of 60 marks overall.
Working Safely:
Part A – 20 out of 33.
Part b – 10 out of 16.
What support do you provide for those with learning difficulties and neurodiversity?
We would liaise and discuss adjustments with you in advance of the course to ensure we fully understand what is required and work with you regarding the best way to support you during the course.
Are the courses industry specific?
No, the IOSH Managing Safely® and IOSH Working Safely® courses are designed to be cross-industry.
Can request a digital copy of my certificate?
No, digital certificates are only available to our digital training providers and their delegates and can only be ordered on new courses once the training provider has been switched over to digital. Digital certificates cannot be issued for any courses where delegates have already been registered for/received hard copy certificates.
