The Kickstart Scheme

The Kickstart Scheme is a £2 billion fund designed to create hundreds of thousands of high quality, 6-month work placements for young people aged 16-24, who are claiming Universal Credit.

As the government launches its Kickstart scheme, aimed at helping young people into work, Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce and the British Chamber network are working together to support businesses to maximise the benefits of the scheme.

The government’s Kickstart Scheme is designed to help young people whose dreams, careers and ideal jobs have been affected by Covid-19.

How the scheme works

R

The Government will fund 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours per week, plus associated employer National Insurance contributions and employer minimum automatic enrollment contributions.  £1,500 is also available per placement to support and train the young person.

This means that for any business, of any size and operating in any sector who is looking to create quality jobs for young people can apply to create new 6-month job placements and support the next generation through the early stages of their career to develop skills and experience.

Please note any business can apply. There is no requirement to be a Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber Member.

*The guidance is still being updated by Department for Work and Pensions, and therefore the criteria requirements may change.

Who can apply?

R

Any organisation, regardless of size, can apply for funding

R

The job placements created with Kickstart funding must be new jobs. They must not replace existing or planned vacancies or cause existing employees or contractors to lose or reduce their employment

R

The roles you are applying for must be a minimum of 25 hours per week for 6 months, paid at least the National Minimum Wage for their age group and should not require people to undertake extensive training before they begin the job placement

R

Each application should include how you will help the participants to develop their skills and experience, including:

  • support to look for long-term work, including career advice and setting goals
  • support with CV and interview preparations
  • supporting the participant with basic skills, such as attendance, timekeeping and teamwork

Hear from an Employer:

“The kickstart scheme has opened up many doors for us as a small company, enabling us to employ local people and provide opportunities to young jobseekers struggling to find work in this difficult time.

“We have been incredibly impressed with the care and attention paid by Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce who have catered for our individual needs. They have provided a smaller company like ours with a wonderful opportunity to take part in a scheme which otherwise would have only been applicable to larger organisations.

“They’ve been on hand with every step of the way and made what could have been a difficult and somewhat daunting task into a wonderful and friendly experience. We have successfully hired some wonderful, enthusiastic, young people through the kickstart scheme and as a result we can’t wait to see our business and team grow.”

What you’ll get:

If your business is able to offer a job opportunity for a young person under the scheme you’ll receive:
  • 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week, plus associated employer National Insurance contributions and minimum pension costs.
  • A contribution towards employer set-up costs, support and training for each candidate placed through the scheme.

Training for your new employees:

We have specifically designed three courses that meet the terms & conditions requirements for individual development. If your application is successful, to ensure you meet the terms and conditions, you will need to ensure that your kickstart employee completes these courses during their placement. The cost of this portfolio of courses (£400) has been deducted for you from the £1500 grant to make the process as simple as possible. These courses have been heavily discounted for you and have already passed approval.

Hear from Kickstart employees:

“I would just like to say a massive thank you to the following people – Jason (Effective Time Management), Jon (Communication for Success) and Lucy (Assertiveness and Confidence). I have completed these courses as part of my Kickstart placement and found them so helpful.

“I have been on a waiting list for therapy for almost 2 years and these 3 courses have covered the topics I needed some support with. I would 100% recommend this to anyone because these courses have just opened my eyes to new possibilities. Thank you so much!

Emily Bevan

Marketing Assistant, The Big Bright Ideas Group

“This is my first real job and I love it! It really has helped to develop my confidence and has made me realise that there are different things out there that I can do – I have developed so many different skills and I would recommend the scheme to anyone.

I am also enjoying the fact that what I am doing here is helping to make a difference for local older people by helping to raise funds to support services like befriending which are really important.”

Brooke Watts-Wilson

Online Retail Assistant, Age UK BRWF

“Although I have only been here a few weeks, I have learnt so much. From the operating the tills, customer service, sorting the donations and displaying and rotating the stock, there are so many different elements, plus the shop has lovely atmosphere and sense of community. I have really enjoyed getting to know everybody and meeting the customers.

I get quite excited about coming to work…you never know what you are going to find!”
