Steam trains set the pace for new multi-sport challenge in the Severn Valley

The Severn Valley Railway is delighted to support an exciting new multi-sport event, Steaming Down the Valley, taking place at Severn Valley Country Park on Saturday 6 June 2026.

Hosted by Shropshire Council and organised by a dedicated team of local volunteers, this unique event invites participants to race alongside one of the country’s best-loved heritage railways. Combining trail running and paddle sports, the event promises a memorable challenge set against the spectacular backdrop of the Severn Valley.

Competitors can choose between 5 km and 10 km fully off-road trail runs, both starting from the historic Country Park Halt to the stirring sound of a steam whistle. Runners will follow scenic woodland paths and riverside trails alongside the railway line.

The 5 km race finishes at the iconic Arley railway station, and the 10 km continues upstream before turning to race the returning steam train back towards the finish.

The routes feature dirt, gravel, grass and woodland trails, with natural undulations and some uneven sections. While challenging, the courses are designed to be accessible for regular runners. Trail shoes are recommended due to the potential for soft or muddy ground near the river.

For those who prefer the water, a paddle sports race will begin at Miner’s Bridge. Canoeists, kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders will launch at the steam whistle and head downstream along the River Severn, chasing the train to the footbridge at Arley.

Race HQ will be based at Severn Valley Country Park, Alveley, WV15 6NG. Throughout the day, visitors and participants can enjoy refreshments at No. 92 Coffee Lounge, serving breakfasts, lunches, teas, coffees and handmade cakes.

Every finisher will receive a medal and goody bag. Places in each event are limited and early booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment.

Lewis Maddox, Visitor Engagement Manager at the Severn Valley Railway, said:

“We’re thrilled to be supporting Severn Valley Country Park for the return of Steaming Down the Valley. The heat is on, and not just in the firebox! We’ll be sure to get our steam locomotives in tip top shape to give the participants a run for their money, from platform to podium!”

Edward Andrews, Parks and Countryside Manager at Shropshire Council, added:

“This stretch of the Severn Valley is a great area for a scenic, off-road run. Add to that the thrill of racing against a steam train, and it’s going to be a race you don’t want to miss. I would urge people to enter early to avoid disappointment.”

With steam, scenery and sporting spirit combined, Steaming Down the Valley is set to be one of the most distinctive challenge events in the region’s 2026 calendar.
