Selcraft UK design and export cap badges for special Canadian commission

Selcraft UK have been exporting bespoke creative designs for medals, insignia, badges, corporate jewellery and staff recognition pins locally, nationally and globally since 1973 – this time it’s for a Canadian company.

The local company have been creating award-winning insignia for over 45 years with works exported to mainland Europe, Arabia and North America, for example, as well as a recent commission for a special medal – the Steven Krulis Champion of Humanity Award – for the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Rwanda.

The latest export is a badge commissioned for members the Prince George Pipes and Drums band based in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. The design was inspired by battalion cap badges of the Canadian Expeditionary Force of the Great War, signifying the centenary of the end of that war to respect the sacrifices made.

The maple leaves represent Canada; the thistles Scotland, and their placement is geographic. The bull moose is representative of a species well known in British Columbia’s central interior and respected for its strength, agility, and speed. Moose are browsers and deliberate about their choices – deliberate play is a feature of good musicians and designers alike.

The badge concept was created by Sheldon Clare, the art work donated by Nathaniel Milgour of Calgary and the design adapted for manufacture by Carl Huxley from Selcraft UK based in the Midlands – a real team effort.

Carl said: “I love working collaboratively and enjoy the challenge of liaising with various parts of the world, in varying time zones with differing cultures and methods of communication. In the end, we all agree on a beautifully designed product that will provide a lasting legacy for us all.”

Sheldon agreed: “It’s been wonderful working with Selcraft UK, the band will proudly wear the new badge along with their new uniforms at community parades and in competition at major events such as Remembrance Day, the Elks May Day Parade, Billy Barker Days and the Williams Lake Stampede. The badges are a great asset to our band and we will cherish them.”
