Pensons at The Netherwood Estate to host fourth biennial Out of Nature Sculpture & Art Exhibition in aid of Herefordshire mental health charity – The Cart Shed

Michelin Starred restaurant, Pensons at The Netherwood Estate, on the Herefordshire/Worcestershire/Shropshire border, will host the fourth biennial Out of Nature Sculpture & Art Exhibition from Saturday 29 August until Sunday 13 September 2020.

From Saturday 29 August, the Estate will welcome visitors to enjoy the outdoor exhibition, headlined by internationally acclaimed sculptor, Halima Cassell, in aid of Herefordshire mental health charity, The Cart Shed. The respected exhibition of contemporary art and sculpture has been carefully curated for visitors to enjoy predominantly in the open air in the restaurant’s productive kitchen gardens, surrounded by the beautiful and dynamic landscape of the Estate.

The exhibition will showcase the work of Shropshire-based sculptor, Halima Cassell. Her work combines strong geometric elements inspired those that occur in the natural world with recurrent patterns and architectural principles carved into a range of materials including marble, bronze and clay.

Halima’s work will be exhibited alongside that of other renowned artists that live and work locally or have been inspired by the area including, Clare Woods, a British sculptor-turned-painter best known for large-scale, oil on aluminium works that strike a balance between observation and abstraction, sculptors Peter Randall-Page, Dominic Welch and Jenny Pickford, ceramicists Isatu Hyde and Jim Wardle, willow artist, Jenny Crisp and photographer Britt Willoughby-Dyer.

As in previous years, the show will raise funds and awareness for The Cart Shed. Founded in 1998, the Herefordshire charity uses the power of the natural environment to offer much needed therapeutic and educational opportunities to those with mental health issues.

Lara Wardle, Director & Curator of the Jerwood Collection, commented:

“This year Out of Nature will be hosted by Pensons in the beautiful, rural setting of the Netherwood Estate. In a year when so many art venues have been sadly closed, it will present a rare opportunity to see art first-hand, as well as buy pieces by internationally renowned artists. This fundraising exhibition will feature works by selected artists including Halima Cassell, Clare Woods, Dominic Welch and Peter Randall-Page and will support the important work of Herefordshire based charity, The Cart Shed. Never has it felt more important to think about how to support people’s mental health and the healing power of nature. I look forward to seeing the works sited within the tranquil setting of Pensons, the gardens of which are so beautifully restorative to wander though.”

Peta Darnley, Owner of Pensons & The Netherwood Estate commented:

“We are thrilled that the Out of Nature exhibition has relocated to the Netherwood Estate. Our vision at Pensons Restaurant in whose garden the exhibition will be held, has always been to show case the very best of the local area. We are honoured that so many highly regarded artists who live, work and are inspired by this region are exhibiting with us this year in aid of such a good cause. As a primarily outdoor exhibition, we hope that people will take the opportunity to visit, particularly so many other cultural events have had to be cancelled this year.”

The sculptures and artwork will be showcased within the kitchen garden and the gallery space beside Pensons restaurant. Visitors can book in to eat at The Netherwood Estate’s Michelin Star restaurant, Pensons or seasonal light refreshments and drinks will be available at the pop up cafe at the exhibition. Award-winning Worcestershire garden nursery, The Cottage Herbery, will be running a plant stall during the event with all proceeds going to The Cart Shed. Their plants are all organic, use peat- free compost and are grown locally, the other side of the River Teme from Pensons.

In line with Government guidance, visitors are asked to plan ahead and book timed entry tickets online and follow a one-way system around the exhibits. The exhibition will be open from 10.00am-5.00pm daily (last entry 4.00pm). Entry is £5 for adults or £15 for a family*
