Following closely on the announcement of a joint venture between the University of Wolverhampton and Herefordshire Council, securing £9 million in funding to develop a new Centre for Cyber Security in Hereford, Xreach Limited is proud to announce the launch of its new Cyber Consultancy division, headed up by Eddie Edwards, Lead Consultant and Chief Information Security Officer.

Eddie joined Xreach in 2017 and has been a key driver in the creation of the new division. With close on 30 years’ experience in the industry, Eddie is a highly qualified Information Security Professional specialising in information security assurance, organisational change management and integration of security policy, standards and procedure.

Based on the doorstep of the proposed new Centre for Cyber Security at Skylon Court, Xreach, with over 14 years’ experience working in secure communications and cyber-security, is uniquely positioned in the important and fast-growing security sector and is part of a growing cluster of cyber security businesses in the Marches area. “Hereford is fast moving to the forefront of cyber security research and innovation and this has been central to our ability to attract and retain personnel of the highest calibre”, says Eddie.

Cyber-attacks are on the increase – 43% of businesses and 19% of charities reported an attack or cyber-security breach within the last 12 months according to the recent 2018 Cyber Security Breaches Survey, commissioned by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. In an area of known under-reporting this represents a staggering figure. 74% of businesses listed cyber-security as a high priority for their organisation while just 60% of businesses reported having sought information, advice or guidance on cyber-security within the last 12 months, with 33% of businesses reporting they had spent nothing on cyber-security over their last financial year.

“Our goal is to work with companies to help them protect their businesses. Cyber-attacks are growing in prominence - from stealing personal information to crippling businesses overnight. Our initial offering will be to help companies both with their new GDPR obligations and to gain certification to Cyber Essentials”.  Cyber Essentials is a UK Government-backed, industry-supported scheme to help businesses protect themselves against common Cyber-attacks and a key element of the UK’s National Cyber Security Programme. Cyber Essentials is a checklist of best security and personal data practices for companies to follow focusing on 5 key areas – Firewalls, Secure Configuration, Access Controls, Malware and Patch Management.

“Gaining certification not only protects your business but it also sends a strong signal to your customers that you take cyber security (and their information) seriously. Rather than a box-ticking exercise, we take a holistic approach and have a range of intuitive toolkits available to enable clients to truly embed cyber-security into their everyday way of thinking”.
