Midwifery Student Takes on London Marathon for Baby Charity

A student midwife from Malvern is preparing for the world-famous London Marathon next year.

Izzy Fisher, a student at the University of Worcester, will take on the 26.2-mile run around the capital in April 2026 as she raises funds for Tommy’s, the pregnancy and baby charity.

She said: “The charity is well known to people in healthcare for the incredible support they give. They do brilliant research into miscarriages and different kinds of pregnancies, and it’s incredible when you think how small the charity is compared to others.”

She added: “That’s why I wanted to do it for them.”

Izzy got her place to run through the ballot. Event organisers said more than 1.1 million applications were made to run the event in 2026, only a handful of those are awarded a place through the ballot.

She said: “I was in shock when I got the email! I thought ‘Oh gosh I’ve actually got a place!’.”

“I kept reading it over and over again,” said Izzy, who’s hoping to complete the race in under 4 hours. “Now I’m a little bit nervous but I feel lucky to have got a place and I’m determined to do it. Everyone who has done it says the atmosphere is just brilliant!”

She said: “I’d like to raise £1,000 if I can. I mainly run as a way to relax, and Worcester is a great place to do it. I know I’ll need to build my stamina, and I’m doing lots of strength training as well.”

Since 2019, the University of Worcester has provided massage and sports therapy to competitors running the event for the charity Sarcoma UK.

Around 10 students each year get the opportunity to take part in the event in London, and Zac Read, Lecturer in Sports Therapy, has advice for people taking on the world famous race.

He said: “Sleep, nutrition, and hydration preparation for the big day should start a week before the run, not the day before!”

He added: “Enjoy yourself! The atmosphere on the day is one of a kind.”
