Family to Honour Son Who Passed Away Before He Could Graduate

The family of a student who sadly passed away before he could graduate have paid tribute to him as they prepare to collect his degree certificate at March’s graduation ceremony.

Daniel Player achieved his Game Art degree at the University of Worcester through part time study to manage his health.

Daniel was born with scoliosis and restrictive lung disease and was later diagnosed with osteoporosis.

He was eventually diagnosed as having a very rare condition called spondylocostal dysostosis and lived with constant pain. Daniel sadly passed away last year. His family will collect his degree certificate at the University’s Spring graduation ceremony at Worcester Cathedral on March 4.

His father, Martin, said: “It’s going to be an emotional but an appropriate and meaningful time for us as a family to honour Dan’s achievements, and it gives us immense pride to be able to have a moment of remembrance during the graduation.”

He continued: “Due to Dan’s lifelong condition, he took 6 years of hard work and commitment to complete his degree. He was magnificently supported by his course lecturers, especially Jacqui Edwards.”

Martin added: “His 6 years at university added something special to his life, and helped build him into the man he became. Even with the lifelong difficulties he had he was the most amazing, caring and loving person who always saw the best in everyone.”

Jacqui Edwards, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader in Game Art at the University said: “Daniel had many challenges with his health and disability, but through his determination, creativity and tenacity he emerged as a promising environment artist.”

She continued: “He was always happy to share ideas and knowledge to grow as an artist and help his friends and classmates.”

She added: “He was known for his wit and humour and is fondly remembered by everyone who knew him.”

Daniel’s family now hope to put in place a degree completion prize in his name to create a lasting legacy that could support future students.
