The Severn Valley Railway is inviting enthusiastic new volunteers to join its catering team and become part of the warm, welcoming community that keeps the much-loved heritage line on track.
Stretching across 16 scenic miles, the railway is powered not only by steam and diesel, but by people. From serving freshly prepared food and drinks to supporting the smooth running of busy outlets, catering volunteers play a vital role in creating memorable days out for thousands of visitors each year.
Whether someone is passionate about railway history, great hospitality or simply enjoys meeting new people, there is a place for them at the SVR. No previous experience is needed for many roles, as full training and support are provided. For those keen to develop their skills further, there are opportunities to work towards accredited qualifications in food hygiene and allergen awareness, with additional training available for those who aspire to become cooks.
Nicky Freeman, visitor experience manager at the Severn Valley Railway, said: “Our catering volunteers are at the heart of the visitor experience. They bring energy, personality and real team spirit to everything they do. You don’t need a background in hospitality – just enthusiasm, a willingness to learn and a love of working with people.”
She added: “Volunteering with us is about much more than serving food. It’s about being part of a supportive team, gaining recognised training and qualifications, and sharing in the pride of keeping this wonderful railway thriving. We’re always excited to welcome new faces into the Severn Valley Railway family.”
Catering outlets can be lively and fast-paced, especially during train service hours and special events, making this an ideal opportunity for people who enjoy being active and working as part of a close-knit team. Volunteers typically support full-day shifts and are encouraged to bring flexibility, positivity and a good level of fitness to make the most of the experience.
Successful applicants will be invited to recruitment days in Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, where they can meet current volunteers, discover more about the roles and take the first step on their journey with the railway.
Anyone interested in getting involved is encouraged to contact Nicky Freeman at [email protected] to register their interest, and there are further details at svr.co.uk.
