When we hear “Corporate Social Responsibility”, it can sound like something only big companies with shiny brochures and sustainability teams get involved in. But for small businesses and charities, CSR doesn’t need to be complicated – and it definitely doesn’t need a glossy report.
In fact, it often starts with your people.
Whether it’s volunteering, supporting local causes, reducing waste or simply being a responsible employer, CSR works best when your team is involved; not just informed. It’s not about box-ticking – it’s about building something your people are proud to be part of.
Want to support a local charity? Ask your team who they’d love to get behind. Fancy organising a volunteer day or litter pick? Let people help shape the idea. When employees feel genuinely connected to a cause, they’re far more likely to get involved – and stay engaged.
And don’t forget the internal stuff. Paying people fairly, offering flexibility, being inclusive – that’s CSR too. Being a good employer is one of the most powerful ways small organisations can make a positive impact.
So if you’re thinking about your CSR plans, start with your people. Chances are, they’ve already got great ideas. You just need to ask.
