In November 2022, a group of men came together at the Zenergy Yoga and Pilates studio in Bromsgrove to explore mindfulness and practice meditation in a session that was aptly titled “Men-ditation” (we didn’t invent that phrase, but it’s pretty perfect). This event was the first of its kind for the group, and it offered a unique opportunity for men to come together and learn about the benefits of mindfulness and meditation in person and in the local area.
Mindfulness is the practice of being present and aware of one’s thoughts and feelings in the present moment. It is a tool that can help individuals manage stress, anxiety, and improve their overall well-being. Meditation is a technique used to achieve a state of relaxation and inner peace by focusing one’s mind on a specific thought, object, or activity.
The event aimed to introduce men to these practices, which are often associated with female-dominated spaces such as yoga studios. However, there is growing awareness of the benefits of mindfulness and meditation for men, and events like this provide an opportunity for them to explore these practices in a safe and supportive environment.
During the session, the men were guided through several meditation practices, breathing exercises, and introduced to the concept of mindfulness and how it can be integrated into their daily lives. The session provided a space for the men to connect with one another and share their experiences, challenges, and goals.
The benefits of mindfulness and meditation are numerous, and they can have a positive impact on an individual’s mental and physical health. Research has shown that regular meditation practice can improve concentration, reduce stress and anxiety, boost immune function, and increase feelings of well-being and happiness.
The event was a success and we ran a second one in January of this year, which is leading into a four-week course later this year. Creating spaces like these where men can explore mindfulness and meditation, really helps to break down stereotypes and promote greater well-being for not only the men, but also for the people they spend time with.
