Spire South Bank Hospital were delighted when Paul Cutler, Lead Orthopaedic Practitioner, visited Christopher Whitehead Language College on 13th November to deliver a 1 hour talk to a year 10 health and social class.
Paul spoke about his role as an operating department practitioner as well as how he started his career in healthcare; the qualifications required, comparisons between working in the NHS and private healthcare. Paul also talked through the day to day aspects of his role and the responsibilities he has as a senior member of the team.
Students got to see first-hand a set of orthopaedic surgical instruments and
Paul also demonstrated gowning up for surgery.
The teacher of the year 10 health and social class praised Paul for delivering “an engaging and interactive session on his job as ODP at Spire South Bank, Worcester. Paul was grilled by the students about how the UK health care system compared to the health care system in the EU and what the future holds for it post Brexit. All students (and staff) thoroughly enjoyed the experience and gained an insight into the valuable work done in the health care sector including the highs and lows.”
It’s clear that both the students and class teacher were fascinated by Paul’s talk with one student commenting “it was a great experience having Paul in to speak to us and hearing about the issues in healthcare at the moment” surely making the lesson fly by!
