Does the sound of a Windows 95 startup screen or the sight of a chunky IBM ThinkPad bring back memories of early business computing to you?
Recently the team at OCM dusted off a collection of vintage business laptops from the 1990s, including iconic IBM ThinkPads, Toshiba Tecra models and old Dell Latitude systems.
CAPTION: Richard Done, Sales Director, revisiting the golden era of business laptops at OCM.
Machines such as the IBM ThinkPad 755CE, originally launched in 1994, were once considered cutting-edge business technology, with some models costing the equivalent of more than £10,000 in today’s money. Long before cloud storage and lightweight laptops – and constant connectivity became the norm – these systems represented major investment for businesses and travelling professionals.
For OCM, however, the collection isn’t just a nostalgic look back at old technology.
Established in 1987, the company has worked within the IT industry for almost four decades and has seen first-hand how business technology has advanced: from floppy disks and docking stations through to cloud computing, secure data destruction and modern IT lifecycle management practices. Sales Director Richard Done has himself been part of that journey for 34 years, having joined OCM back in 1992.
The vintage laptops are a nostalgic reminder of how quickly technology changes, plus the importance of experienced IT handling and responsible disposal, as equipment reaches the end of its working life.
Today, OCM works with organisations across the UK to securely collect, process and manage redundant IT equipment. In turn, this helps businesses maximise value and protect sensitive data, alongside supporting more sustainable technology practices.
Richard said: “The thing is, I remember us buying these laptops from a corporate customer back in the day! To think they’re now older than a lot of the team in our warehouse is a sobering thought. Happy days!”
From floppy disks and CD-ROM drives through to today’s cloud-based systems, the evolution of business computing has been remarkable. Indeed, to the team at OCM at least, these vintage laptops offer a fascinating reminder of how far the industry has come.
