Herefordshire team prepares others to save lives in African wilderness

In a world where headlines are often dominated by crisis, the work that helps prevent those outcomes and keeps people safe rarely makes the news.

But behind the scenes—and often far from home—teams are equipping others with the skills to step forward when it matters most, in situations they hope they will never face.

A Herefordshire-based medical training company, Gravitas Medical Solutions, has recently returned from Tanzania, where it delivered intensive first responder training to safari company staff in the remote Tarangire National Park.

From hesitation to decisive action

Working with safari guides and camp teams, the programme focused on preparing individuals to manage medical emergencies in environments where professional help may be hours away.

Over ten days, participants developed the skills and confidence to assess casualties, manage complex situations and coordinate emergency responses under pressure.

Highly realistic scenarios formed a key part of the training.

These included night-time emergency exercises, remote medical incidents and even a simulated lion attack requiring rapid, coordinated action.

For many, it was their first experience of applying these skills in such conditions.

By the end of the programme, every participant had successfully passed their assessments—demonstrating their ability to respond effectively in real-world situations. For others, refresher sessions built on previous training from 2 years ago, with many sharing first hand experiences of how their learning had been put into action.

Work that often goes unseen

While the outcomes of emergencies are often visible, the preparation behind them is not.

Training like this ensures that when incidents do occur, there are people on the ground who are ready—able to make decisions, support others and take control of difficult situations.

Global work, local roots

Gravitas Medical, based in Herefordshire, delivers specialist training and consultancy with compassion and empathy to organisations operating across the UK and internationally, including in Africa and the Middle East.

Drawing on experience from the UK military and NHS, the organisation supports teams working in high-risk, remote and austere environments, as well as providing mental health and suicide prevention training.

Through its partnership with The Baton of Hope, Gravitas is contributing to a growing national movement focused on raising awareness and preventing suicide through proactive intervention.

Building confidence that saves lives

Mike McLeod, Head of Education at Gravitas Medical Solutions said:

“We’re all used to seeing the outcomes when things go wrong, but rarely the preparation behind it.

What stands out is how quickly people grow into the role. You see individuals arrive unsure, and within days they’re making decisions, solving problems and supporting each other under pressure.

That shift in confidence is what ultimately makes the difference.”

Meeting a growing need

As organisations increasingly operate in complex hostile environments, the demand for specialist training continues to rise.

Gravitas Medical is now looking to expand its work with organisations seeking to strengthen both emergency preparedness and proactive approaches to wellbeing.
