After attracting more than 800 people last year, the University of Worcester’s Children and Families Festival is returning in May with double the capacity and an even wider range of free activities and support services for families.
Tickets are now available for the festival, organised by students and staff in the University’s Department for Children and Families, which combines exciting play activities with opportunities for families to meet local organisations and learn about the help and support available to them.
Held at the University’s Lakeside Campus on Saturday 9 May, festivalgoers will be able to experience kayaking, ziplining, a pop-up play area, inflatables and much more.
Following glowing feedback from last year’s inaugural event, capacity has now increased to 1,700 people, giving even more families the chance to take part.
Other organisations involved include Tudor House Museum, The Hive Library, Guide Dogs, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Scouts, and many more.
Dr Emma Laurence, Lecturer in the Department for Children and Families and organiser, said: “This festival is about showing how a university can genuinely work alongside its community. It’s not just a fun day out, it’s about opening our doors, bringing people together, and helping families connect with support that already exists around them.”
Many organisations from last year’s festival are returning, alongside a growing number of new contributors.
Emma said: “There’ll be significantly more support services involved this time. People have really understood the vision for the festival and have been keen to get involved in a meaningful way.”
As with last year, planning and delivering the event has provided valuable real-world experience for students of Early Childhood at the University.
“Through organising the festival, students develop real-world project management and employability skills,” Emma said. “Just as importantly, they see the tangible impact they can have in their local community, which can be incredibly powerful for their confidence and aspirations.”
Families will be able to enjoy a wide range of free activities across the festival, with most experiences available at no cost. Tickets are free but are expected to be in strong demand. Book your place by visiting the University of Worcester website.
