Mayor Welcomes University Netballers After Historic Trophy Win

Netballers from the University of Worcester have been welcomed to the Guildhall by the City’s Mayor, who formally congratulated the side for their historic win in the National Trophy Final.

The team defeated Bath 2s in the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) National Trophy Final at the end of March, having reached the final for the first time in a decade.

Councillor Dr Matt Lamb, Mayor of Worcester, hosted the players to the Mayor’s Parlour in the Guildhall, where he spoke with them about their success on the court and their academic studies.

“It has been absolutely brilliant to meet such an inspirational group,” he said. “It’s fantastic that they’ve won the Trophy, being in the final for the first time in ten years is such an achievement.”

He continued: “Just meeting the team and talking about their achievements, and how they’ve beaten some incredibly talented teams from University’s across the country has been great.”

He added: “The city of Worcester is very, very proud that they’ve done this.”

Scarlett Thorneley, 2nd-year Occupational Therapy student and Team Captain, said: “It’s an honour to be asked to come here. We didn’t expect our success to have such a big impact on the city, so it’s great to hear this.”

“It’s amazing,” said Holly French, Head Coach. “It’s such a once in a lifetime moment for these girls, and for me as well.”

“I’m very proud of them,” she added. “And it’s so nice to see them here today, so proud of their own achievements as they talked to the mayor. It’s the first time I’ve met the Mayor of Worcester and so it’s so nice to see him taking so much interest in the University and the netballers.”
