A new group is launching in Worcester to help people explore the works of William Shakespeare through play, interaction and discussion.
The Shakespeare Circle at The Hive launches on 21 April, 6.30pm-8pm aligning with the celebrations of the playwright’s birthday week.
The new monthly workshop responds directly to the strong local appetite for Shakespeare-inspired activities, after earlier events at The Hive attracted large audiences and lively debate.
Designed for both long-time Shakespeare lovers and those who are simply curious, the sessions will bring people together through informal conversation and practical, accessible drama exercises. The Circle is led by two University of Worcester Shakespeare enthusiasts.
Tom Mandall, Academic Liaison Librarian at The University of Worcester, said: “Each month we’ll look at a different play, and whether it’s one of your favourites, completely new to you, or somewhere in between, you’re invited to join us.”
Margaret Tildesley, Senior Lecturer at the University of Worcester, said: “Shakespeare is something to be playful with. Reading, in its broadest sense, can involve the whole body, it invites movement, voice, and a spirit of lively action.”
“In the circle,” she added, “we will bring the text to life!”
The first session will explore a Midsummer Night’s Dream, following its recent success in an earlier Hive event where academics debated their favourite Shakespeare plays and audiences voted for the winner. “It was a clear winner,” said Margaret. “So it felt natural to make it the focus of our first workshop.”
Open to anyone aged 16 and over, the Circle welcomes participants with any level of Shakespeare knowledge.
“People well-versed in the plays will bring their own insights,” said Margaret, “but those joining out of curiosity, or an interest in drama and poetry, will bring a fresh and equally valuable energy.”
She added: “We’ll start with a bank of ideas, but ultimately the sessions will be shaped by the group, their interest, responses and perspectives.”
Upcoming sessions:
Tuesday 21 April: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Tuesday 12 May: Romeo and Juliet
Tuesday 16 June: Measure for Measure
Spaces are limited, and advance booking is essential. Book via the Hive website.
