Ministerial visit to Kidderminster sites shines spotlight on apprentices

Specsavers Manufacturing & Distribution (M&D) welcomed Jacqui Smith, Minister of State for Skills, to Lens Online and International Glazing Services (IGS) during National Apprenticeship Week on Friday 13 February.

During the visit, Minister Smith met more than 15 apprentices across a range of programmes—from Level 2 Warehouse Operatives to Level 6 Supply Chain Management. Colleagues shared why they chose an apprenticeship and how the opportunity is helping them build long-term careers.

A guided tour of both sites showcased innovative work, including an employee-led robotics project at Lens Online which is helping automate the process of sending glasses to stores. The Minister spent time with warehouse operative apprentices who contributed to the project and learned more about the skills included in their programme, such as health and safety, MHE training, product handling and teamwork.

“With 45 apprentices now working across these sites, Specsavers is a shining example of how employers can invest in their workforce,” said Minister Smith. “It was wonderful to hear first-hand how these opportunities are opening doors to fulfilling careers.”

Jayne Cole, HR Business Partner, leads apprenticeship development across the three sites. When she joined four years ago there were just two apprentices—today there are 45. “We’re passionate about helping colleagues develop their skills,” Jayne said. “The range of programmes we offer means there’s something for everyone.”

Dan Preston, Operations Manager at Lens Online, is completing the Supply Chain Management degree apprenticeship and credits it with supporting his promotion and involvement in major projects. “It’s a fantastic way to grow your skills and confidence,” he said.
