University Lecturer Co‑Edits New Anthology Supporting Carers

A University of Worcester lecturer has co-edited a new anthology exploring the realities of caregiving, with all proceeds being donated to a vital local charity.

Craft of Care, collated and edited by Dr Charley Barnes from the University of Worcester alongside fellow writer Claire Walker, is an anthology of creative nonfiction and poetry that gives voice to the often-overlooked experiences of carers.

All proceeds from the book will support the work of St Richard’s Hospice.

The collection brings together contributions from writers across the UK, responding creatively to the theme of caregiving and the emotional, physical, and practical challenges it can entail.

“It’s written by and for carers,” said Dr Barnes. “Claire and I really know what it’s like to care for someone in the family; from shopping to carrying out personal care, and so much more.”

She continued: “We wanted to create this collection because we felt there isn’t enough space for the voices of carers in writing, and the challenges of caregiving aren’t spoken about enough.”

The book was created following an open call for submissions and features the work of writers including Sophia Argyris, Penelope Shuttle, Paul Atten Ash, Catherine Redford, Rob Walton, Catherine Balaq, and Gaynor Jones, among others.

Claire Walker, author and editor of Craft of Care, said: “Caregiving can be a lonely endeavour and, for me, the process of collating this anthology with Charley has reinforced how important it can be to share experiences.”

“Alongside the highly individual nature of caregiving circumstances, there is also universality, recognising areas of shared experience can, we hope, offer support and comfort.”

The anthology will be launched online on February 25 at 6.30pm, to ensure the event is as accessible as possible. The virtual launch will feature readings from contributors, and a link to the event will be posted on the Black Pear Press website on the day of the event.
