The University of Worcester’s Women’s Football Team are chasing promotion, as they enter the new year unbeaten after a record-breaking first half of the season.
The side has won all eight of its league and cup fixtures so far, scoring 96 goals and conceding just once.
They sit top of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Midlands Division 2B, the third tier of women’s university football.
Vice-Captain, Dani Rogers, currently completing her Sports and Exercise Medicine Masters, said: “The confidence we had coming into the season from last year has really helped. We’ve become the top side in our league, and we’ve worked really hard on recruitment, so we’ve got some great girls on the side.”
“We’re working hard, gelling well together on and off the pitch, and we’re really grateful for the support we’ve been getting from the students, the other sports teams, and the University management.”
Head Coach, Mike Harris, said: “The pressure is on to keep the success up, but that pressure is a real privilege for us. We’ve got excellent players, staff, and supporters and we’re all really appreciative of the opportunities that we’ve been getting.”
“Our goal is to rise up the BUCS tiers to ensure our Women’s Football team sits among the very best in the country,” he added. “We want to win trophies and enjoy representing the University sports programme as best we can to show that investment in Women’s Football is very much worthwhile. We’ve got an outstanding group of players, and we’ll continue to raise our standards.”
Alongside the team’s collective success, individual performances have stood out. The goalkeeper currently tops the entire BUCS football league for clean sheets this season, while two players rank among the top five goal scorers across BUCS.
This has been a spectacular year for Women’s football nationally, with England’s Lionesses becoming European Champions.
VC Dani Rogers said: “We’re seeing such a growth in women’s football here at the University. Many girls have been turning up to play who’ve never played before but we’re able to introduce them to this beautiful game.”
Dani added: “If we win our next games against Warwick, Leicester, and then Birmingham, we’ll have won the league by the end of January. We’ve got a great rivalry against Birmingham so if we can beat them again, we’ll be really pleased.”
