Parents pushed out of work due to abuse from children

Social enterprise PEGS was launched to support parents, carers and guardians experiencing Child to Parent Abuse.

CPA can take the form of physical, financial, emotional or sexual abuse and is directed from a child of any age (including adult offspring) towards a person with parental responsibility.

A survey undertaken by PEGS – thought to be the largest of its kind ever completed in the UK – showed an overwhelming 70% of parents had been forced to reduce their hours or leave work altogether in response to the abuse they were experiencing at home (22% had left their job, and 48% had cut down their hours).

Over a third of parents (36%) also revealed they didn’t feel they could ask for help because of their career.

In response, PEGS has joined forces with the Department for Work and Pensions to launch an Employer Covenant – it’s completely free to sign, and aims to support employers to implement CPA-specific policies and practices in their workplace. Information, template HR documents, and a free hour-long training session are available for all employers who pledge to stand by staff (and service users if applicable) experiencing CPA.
