Thank you to everyone who has supported the Foodbank in 2021

Sadly, the number of people being helped by Worcester Foodbank has been rising significantly during 2021 and December saw their busiest month since they opened their doors on 21st June 2012, when they fed 1,654 people; that is 29% higher than December 2020. But it is not about the numbers, distressing as they are, but about the way in which they see the frowns on the faces of their clients turned upside down; smiling as they experience a little compassion and love through the food parcels they receive.

The work of foodbank will continue into 2022, and with continued support they will be able to meet this need and lobby for the end of food poverty with a living household income for all. As the Christmas chart topping song (by Ladbaby) says “Sausage Rolls for everyone!”.

But returning to the figures, they speak volumes:
• The highest monthly figure since we opened on 21st June 2012.
• The annual figures show the trend of increasing demand (2021 is 22% over 2020)
• But they have managed this despite restricted access due to COVID
• Donations of food and finance have enabled them to meet the demand.
• For the future the wait continues for the outcome of energy prices and other rising costs for fear that people on the edge will be tipped over

Grahame Lucas, Manager, Worcester Foodbank, says:

“The Worcester Foodbank are very grateful and give thanks to all those who have supported them in 2021. The generosity of people never ceases to amaze us, with their generosity in the giving of food, money and time. As a Christian based organisation, it is a poignant reminder that at this time of giving (I write this just after Christmas), when we remember the birth of Jesus, who came into this world to give hope, the people of Worcester continue to give hope to those in crisis who turn to Foodbank for help.

“So, we will be under severe pressure to maintain donations and all at a time when we also need to focus some time and energy on finding replacement warehousing and distribution premises due to the proposed redevelopment of the area in which we are currently located.

“We will need some external help to find the right premises. We currently pay a commercial rent for the lease of our warehouse.”
