Who completes a management buyout during a global pandemic? Cathy Harrison and Kerry Perkins do! Optimec Metrology manufacture the highly successful Optimec range of benchmark instrumentation in Malvern, UK to the global contact lens, intraocular lens and associated manufacturing industries. The instruments are essential in enabling manufacturers to inspect the quality of their products, as well as to measure and check the parameters, ensuring that they meet the stringent requirements of international standards. They are proud to support and promote British manufacturing with 80% of revenue being raised from worldwide exports to over 35 countries.
Colin Richards, Managing Director of Optimec Limited announced his retirement in March 2020 leaving all staff in shock and fearing for their jobs, envisaging the company being sold to an overseas investor. Cathy, then Optimec Office Administrator, had been with the company for less than two years following redundancy from her previous role after 14 years of service and expressed her concerns to Colin about history repeating itself. Much to her amazement Colin suggested that Cathy take over the business reins. Kerry had been the Optimec Accounts Manager for 10 years and following a phonecall from a very excited Cathy immediately scheduled a meeting with Colin and the process started! So, in the midst of a worldwide pandemic with the expert legal support from Mandip Riar of Harrison Clark Rickerby and Accountancy support from Jeremy Clarke-Morris of Kendall Wadley a management buyout was completed!
Cathy and Kerry are the two very proud Directors of Optimec Metrology and continue to promote the Optimec brand which is recognised throughout the world with a reputation for precision and expert craftsmanship. They have been catapulted into the wonderful world of international trade within a very niche industry and are enjoying every second of the rollercoaster they are riding! They have the most amazing team, all of which were employees of Optimec.
Cathy and Kerry are constantly learning and have a clear business vision, boosted by successfully completing the Elevate Business Support Programme in conjunction with Hereford and Worcester County Council and Peer to Peer Network in Worcestershire programme provided by Worcestershire Business Central. They have constant encouragement and advice from Colin Richards, Louise Blunt of Bizsmart and an ever increasing invaluable support network. The combination of endless enthusiasm, dedication and pride in their products has strengthened their confidence and knowledge and they plan to increase worldwide awareness of the Optimec brand and their product range.
