The stable belt is worn at times by the armed forces of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries.
The term “stable belt” is known to have origins in the UK, when cavalrymen would place the surcingle (a strap usually made of leather that fastens around the horse’s girth) around their waist when cleaning the stables and tending to their horses. In the 1950s it’s widely understood that their use spread to all branches of the armed forces, adding a splash of colour and individuality to the khaki working uniforms.
