Founded in 1973 and based in Malvern, Worcestershire, Carl Huxley and the team at Selcraft UK have witnessed the quantum leap in technology and its use, particularly throughout the last decade, with regard to computer-aided design.
Prior to this technological revolution, Selcraft received “artworks” of great variety in a huge variety of ways. Indeed, producing the “patterns” that would determine manufacture was mostly left to their creative imagination and ingenuity as, very rarely, if at all, the supplied artwork production was ready.
In times past, ingenuity and experience – how Selcraft would convert the artwork into an attractive design – was by discussion and mutual consent. This meant telephone calls or meetings with clients but without the ability we have today; ultimately virtual reality imagery of the product and providing a colour visualisation of how the medal will appear once made. Trust, confidence and belief in Selcraft’s skills was then, and continues to be, of paramount importance.
The medal shown is the United Arab Emirates Liberation of Kuwait Medal issued in 1991, some 29 years ago. The final item can be seen alongside the original hand-painted artwork. Selcraft is responsible for producing many military campaign medals, issued to participating troops in all of the Gulf States at that time and continues to successfully serve this region today.
The hand-painted artwork visualisation by an artist, as can be seen in this image, have a character and appeal of their own; today there are very few companies besides Selcraft, that are able to produce medals from such artworks.
