Don’t let your insurance claim go up in flames

Do you know the rhyme – ‘Remember, Remember the 5th of November’?

Actually, the use of fireworks seems to start around Halloween and into the new year nowadays, so you need to be prepared for all events that include fireworks. From children to adults, there is something joyous about watching a well organised fireworks display.

There will be many firework events with excited visitors attending such as at local schools for fundraising opportunities, local parks, rugby and football clubs, hotels and leisure centres as well as wedding receptions.

In the right hands, a firework display is a wonderful thing with the ‘ooohs and ahhs’ of spectators, enjoying staring up into the wonderous sky with the bright flashes and loud bangs. Sadly, in the wrong hands, it can be a disaster and can cause long-term damage not only to property but also human life too.

If you are holding a fireworks event this winter, there are quite a few things that you need to consider in terms of your insurance. Here are our top 10:

  1. You can organise bespoke fireworks display insurance.
  2. Cancellation insurance is worth having, which is particularly apt in this current environment with COVID hanging over our heads. Of course, the weather plays a huge part in the safety of fireworks and bonfires, if the weather conditions are not favourable then the event will need to be cancelled – often at the very last minute.
  3. Civil disturbance – bear this in mind for any rowdy behaviour, the neighbours do not take kindly to it.
  4. Carry out a fire risk assessment, this is actually a legal requirement for all businesses.
  5. Check your insurance policy – many of them exclude firework displays as this is a separate cover.
  6. Ensure that your own risk assessment is carried out and all guests are aware of their responsibilities for keeping safe.
  7. Make certain that animals are safe and far enough away to not feel too frightened. If spooked they can cause damage to property or themselves.
  8. Ensure that the area where you are lighting fireworks is properly secure and away from other people, have plenty of lighting so that you can see what you are doing.
  1. Clear away combustible materials from around your property – this can include rubbish bins and dry vegetation. Be aware that some insurance policies have rules regarding this. Park cars far enough away.
  2. Ensure your doors and windows are locked when you are out of the building, this includes windows which might be accessible via flat roofs or vegetation. Many insurance policies specify a minimum level of security required.

And remember, insurance is not instead of good Health and Safety measures, which should come first and foremost.
