WYEVALE Nurseries is launching an ‘Awesome Autumn’ campaign to encourage gardeners and the wider horticultural industry to recognise autumn as one of the best times of the year for planting (October 2026).
The grower is backing the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) call for Britain to make autumn as important as spring, highlighting the season’s benefits for plant establishment, resilience and bareroot planting projects.
Cian Lynch, Assistant Manager (Commercial), at the leading Hereford-based commercial nursery, explains: “Spring has traditionally been seen as the main planting season, but autumn offers enormous advantages that are often overlooked. Cooler temperatures, rainfall and warm soil conditions create an ideal environment for roots to establish before winter, heavier potential rainfall and ahead of the pressures of our increasingly hotter summers.
“We’re proud to support the RHS in encouraging gardeners, landscapers and amenity planners and project specifiers to look at their planting calendars. As periods of drought and extreme heat become more common, giving plants the opportunity to develop strong root systems before summer is increasingly important.”
As part of its Awesome Autumn campaign, Wyevale Nurseries is promoting the environmental and practical benefits of bareroot hedging, with its lifting season beginning in November. The company says autumn is the ideal time for planning and ordering bareroot trees and saplings, helping people secure stock and preferred varieties ahead of peak demand.
Bareroot plants are grown in open fields and lifted during dormancy between November and March. They require no plastic pots and have lower production and transportation impacts, making them a sustainable and cost-effective solution for commercial and amenity planting schemes.
Cian continues: “Whether it’s a new hedge, a woodland project or a large-scale landscaping scheme, autumn is awesome, as it can give plants the best possible start. Planning now also allows customers to secure the stock they need and have sites fully prepared for planting when the bareroot season gets underway in November.
“By celebrating Awesome Autumn, we want to remind people that spring isn’t the only season for successful planting. In many cases, autumn can be a much smarter choice and has some great environmental benefits too.”
The RHS recently urged Britain to place greater importance on autumn planting, citing the benefits of stronger root establishment, reduced water stress and improved resilience to hotter, drier summers. The organisation says autumn planting can help trees, shrubs, climbers and perennials establish before the next period of extreme weather.
Cian adds: “Our team of amenity experts and tree and hedging specialists are on hand to help anyone who needs free advice and assistance with this topic under our Awesome Autumn banner. We also have a free Bareroot Hedging and Forestry Guide, which is available to download here: www.wyevalenurseries.co.uk/news-projects/our-bareroot-hedging-and-forestry-catalogues-are-available-to-download-here/.
“Individuals looking to purchase hedging on a smaller scale, can visit our Wyevale Hedges website www.wyevalehedges.co.uk for further free advice too.”
Wyevale Nurseries, which celebrates its 96th anniversary this year, supplies landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters, landowners and garden centres with a comprehensive range of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants all year round.
