Most people who could benefit from counselling never seek it – often because they don’t think their problems are serious enough. Kate Wilkinson of Transform Counselling UK addresses this directly in the latest episode of Dandelion Video Production’s What Do You Do? podcast.
“If you feel like you would benefit from a space to talk about what’s difficult for you at the moment, that’s enough,” Kate told host Adam Hanslow-Smith. Clients come to her for relationship challenges, stress, burnout, low confidence, and anxiety. The bar for seeking support is lower than most people think.
For anyone considering counselling for the first time, Kate is clear about what it actually involves. A counsellor provides a non-judgmental space to think things through differently and arrive at your own conclusions. “You come into a counselling room and we just take you as you are,” she explains. “You’re not going to worry about how they’re seeing you.”
Kate has concerns about turning to AI chatbots as an alternative, “It tells you what you want to hear. If you’re talking to AI and you’re in crisis, where do you go with that? There’s no support.” Unlike AI, a counsellor remains conscious of how a client leaves the room and follows up if there’s cause for concern.
