Shakespeare Circle to Return for Act Two at The Hive

Worcester’s Shakespeare Circle is returning to The Hive this autumn following the success of its first series earlier this year.

The monthly workshops offer a welcoming space for both seasoned Shakespeare enthusiasts and those completely new to the playwright’s work. Through informal discussion, shared reading and accessible drama activities, participants are encouraged to explore Shakespeare’s plays together.

Led by University of Worcester Shakespeare enthusiasts Maggie Tildesley, Senior Lecturer in Primary Education, and Tom Mandall, Academic Liaison Librarian, both from the University of Worcester, the Circle has developed a growing community of readers, theatre lovers and newcomers to the plays.

Tom Mandall said: “The Circle has already built a wonderful community. What was really encouraging during the sessions earlier this year was discovering new ways of thinking about Shakespeare’s plays through the wide range of perspectives people brought to the discussion.”

He added: “Some participants came with extensive knowledge of the plays, while others were completely new to Shakespeare. Some had read the play we were discussing in advance, some joined with fresh eyes, and every contribution added something to our conversations.”

Joining this year’s programme will be specialists from the University of Worcester, including Senior Lecturer Dr Daniel Somerville and Professor of Shakespeare Studies Nicoleta Cinpoeş, who will share their expertise and perspective with the group.

Tom said: “Hearing from people with different experiences and interpretations has shifted my own understanding of Shakespeare’s texts. The Circle gives us the time and space to discuss these plays in an open and welcoming environment.”

Building on Worcester’s appetite for Shakespeare-related events, the workshops follow a series of popular Shakespeare activities at The Hive that attracted large audiences and lively debate.

“The way we’ve been celebrating Shakespeare in Worcester is wonderful, and this group continues to find new ways to do that,” said Tom. “Some people enjoy reading the plays, others enjoy watching performances, and some like getting on their feet and exploring the scenes through performance. The Circle brings those different approaches together.”

Each session focuses on a different Shakespeare play, combining discussion and interactive activities designed to make the works accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
