Preserving History, Building a Future: Colwall Malvern Water Site to House State-of-the-Art Luxury Care Home

Colwall Malvern Water, an iconic site renowned for its centuries-old history and pristine spring water, is poised to embark on a new chapter. The historically significant location, known for its natural mineral-rich spring water, will soon be transformed into a luxurious care home facility by Rotherwood Healthcare, dedicated to providing compassionate and quality care to the community.

Historical Legacy:
Colwall Malvern Water boasts a rich history dating back centuries. Since the 16th century, its natural spring water has been a symbol of purity and vitality. In 1850, Schweppes initiated commercial-scale distribution, leading to the town’s growth during the Victorian era. The site housed the first ‘water cure’ centre, attracting notable figures like Charles Darwin, who sought its alleged healing properties for his ailing daughter. Malvern Water, once an NHS prescription, has been a favourite of the Royal Family for over 400 years.

Legacy Transition:
Over the years, the site underwent changes, including Coca Cola Enterprises’ takeover in 1987. In 1992, Coca-Cola Schweppes produced a limited quantity of fine glass water decanters to celebrate 100 years of the Colwall bottling works. The design included an illustration of the Malvern Hills on the rear of the decanter that could be seen through the contents. The decanters are now rare collector’s items and almost impossible to secure.

In October 2010, the factory closed due to no longer being able to produce enough Malvern Water on the scale it needs to compete in today’s bottled water sector. Modern bottled water plants are around 10 times the size of Colwall and can often produce more water in a day than the site could in a month.

A New Chapter:
In a significant development, Rotherwood Healthcare is in process of building a state-of-the-art care home on the grounds of Colwall Malvern Water. This project aims to seamlessly blend historical charm with modern amenities, creating a space that pays homage to the site’s heritage while serving as a beacon of care and support for the local community.

John Fennell, Chief Executive Officer of Rotherwood Healthcare, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We are honoured to be a part of Colwall Malvern Water’s legacy. Our vision is to create a care home that not only provides exceptional healthcare and support for residents but also respects and preserves the historical significance of this remarkable location.”

Local authorities and community members have expressed support for the venture, recognising the potential positive impact on the community. The project is expected to generate employment opportunities and contribute to the local economy, further strengthening the bond between Colwall Malvern Water and the community it has been a part of for centuries.
