Worcester Warriors Leaders Keep Focus on Community During Lockdown

Jason Whittingham, owner of Rugby Union team Worcester Warriors, and Peter Kelly, Managing Director of the Gallagher’s Premiership club, joined the IsoNation community to talk about the halt in sports across the UK, lack of revenue, and community values during the pandemic and beyond.

The lockdown has brought with it a complete halt in UK wide sport, with that a challenging time for sport clubs up and down the country, but for Warriors owner, Jason Whittingham, and club MD, Peter Kelly, it’s been the people they’ve focussed on.

Jason says; ‘It’s one thing to own a business, but when that business has got a community sports club attached to it, it’s a different level. After you think about your employees, the 200 people who are still hugely supportive about everything we’re doing, you think about the enormous community attached to that club. This club will be here long after we’re gone – we’re just custodians.

‘We’ve got a stakeholder that is a community of several thousand people that we also need to keep informed.’

During the interview, Nick Baxter, MD at Baxter Williams, talked to Jason and Peter about the structure and immediate plans they put into place for the business during lockdown, the impact on the community, players, employees and revenue.

Peter added; ‘The main impact to the company is that revenue has gone to practically zero over-night, of course, and the effect on staff and their welfare.’ Highlighting the importance of their staff Peter went onto say; ‘We’ve made an effort to get to know all our staff better during this time.’
