Some places stay with you forever. For Herefordshire artist Katie Hollinshead, the Brecon Beacons is one of them. It’s where she’s experienced unforgettable paragliding flights, watched spectacular sunsets from the sky and found moments of complete peace suspended above the landscape. Those experiences became the inspiration for ‘Where We Breathe’.
Created in collaboration with Visit Brecon Beacons, the original oil painting brings together adventure tourism, storytelling and fine art to celebrate one of Wales’ most extraordinary landscapes. It also demonstrates how creative collaborations can help destinations tell richer, more emotional stories.
Many people assume paragliding is all about adrenaline, but Katie believes the opposite is true. “Once your feet leave the ground, the world slows down. You stop thinking about emails, deadlines and everyday life. You become completely present.” That feeling of freedom, perspective and connection with nature lies at the heart of the painting.
Created from a reference photograph by adventure photographer Henry George, the artwork combines photography’s ability to capture a fleeting moment with painting’s ability to capture the emotion of being there.
Through her creative studio, The Stunt Artists, Katie partners with tourism organisations, destinations and adventure brands to transform real experiences into compelling stories through art, photography and film. Every project begins with genuine adventure, creating work that inspires people not only to appreciate a place, but to experience it for themselves.
‘Where We Breathe’ is a reminder that the most powerful stories don’t just show people a destination, they make them feel what it’s like to be there.
