Worcestershire-based professional organiser Kath Holmes of Uncluttered by Kath is featured in the latest episode of Dandelion Video Production’s What Do You Do? podcast, exploring a profession many people don’t know exists.
With only 400 professional organisers in the UK, Holmes is part of a growing industry now supported by formal accreditations and the Association of Professional Declutterers & Organisers.
“Professional organisation is more than just ‘getting rid of stuff,'” says Holmes. “It’s a process that helps people emotionally come to terms with saying goodbye to their items.”
Holmes explains that her work varies significantly depending on the project. For standard jobs like kitchen overhauls, she can work independently. However, more emotionally charged projects – such as helping bereaved families clear a loved one’s belongings – require a different approach.
“If we’re going through stuff that holds memories, it’s much harder for me to say ‘you probably don’t need these,’ because it could be the most valuable item to that person,” Holmes explains.
Research suggests people make around 35,000 decisions daily. Holmes argues that reducing household clutter significantly reduces this mental load, freeing up energy for more important decisions.
